NextGEN GHT Preview

Unveiling the NextGEN GHT: 2026 Route Preview, Online Community, and Digital Map Partnership

We are thrilled to announce the official release of the 2026 Great Himalaya Trail (GHT) Route Preview, the launch of our new Official Online Community, and a major digital mapping partnership with FarOut.

The GHT is evolving. As we look toward the 2026 season, we are introducing four distinct route iterations—Alpine, Trek, Run, and Bike—designed to meet the needs of a new generation of explorers. You can read the full details on these new route evolutions in our official press release here.

New GHT Online Community

The best thing about the GHT or any long trail is the people. To help facilitate the sharing of knowledge, passion (and trail conditions of course), we have created the Official GHT Community on Discord. If you haven’t used Discord, its a online platform with various channels to share information on everything from resupply options to gear to routes. You can easily search for past discussions and post you own questions + help others. You can even find hiking partners and much more, and its where we will host our GHT community calls. (So yes its worth setting up a free account on discord just for this we promise!).

See the link at the bottom of the page to get access.

Digital Navigation with FarOut

We are officially partnering with FarOut to provide navigation, points-of-interest like tea houses, water sources, bridges etc all with the ability to comment in real time for the GHT Trek route. We are targeting mid summer for the release. Check out the features here: https://faroutguides.com/features/

Additionally, interactive previews are now available via CalTopo and Google My Maps, allowing you to dive into the folders and descriptions of the new lines and start to get excited. (see below)

Comming for Summer 2026

New Routes!

Below is a preview map showing the simplified versions of the NextGEN GHT Routes.

The 4 routes are the latest evolution of the GHT which you can read about on the press release here.

  • GHT Alpine Route: A brand-new, high-altitude mountaineering line for those seeking extreme adventure, avoiding traditional tourist paths and pushing into unvisited terrain.
  • GHT Trek: An updated version of the classic “high route,” rerouted to avoid new road construction and industrial projects.
  • GHT Run: A specialized route for mountain runners, designed to avoid technical passes while maintaining the trail’s remote spirit.
  • GHT Bike: A bike-specific route focusing on rideable terrain MTB and Gravel versions is the goal

Note: These route maps are simplified and intended to give you an idea, not intended for navigation.

We are working on fine tuning the full resolution routes which will be released in time for fall 2026 trekkers.

For a an interactive map and also the potential new route alternates, see the link at the bottom

Help Us Build the Future: Join the GHT Scouting Team

The Great Himalaya Trail is more than just a line on a map—it is a living, breathing project built by the community, for the community. As we roll out the NextGEN GHT routes, we are looking for dedicated volunteers to help us verify, document, and pioneer the trails of tomorrow.

Whether you are a seasoned mountaineer or a trekker who loves the details, there is a place for you on the scouting team. Every piece of data collected adds immense value to the safety and experience of future hikers.

For more details, follow the link below to see the options and more.

We are Commited to Protecting the GHT Trail Community

The GHT is the highest and one of the toughest trails on the planet, it takes you though some of the most remote landscapes and comunities in the Himilaya.

Landslides can sweep away trails and bridges, storms can close passes, ropes and mountineering skills are needed on some routes.

Its a serious undertaking and we take the protection of trekkers and those local communities very seriously.

Here is the Link to get the Full Details

We want to ensure that everyone that is planning on hiking the GHT starts with a good foundation in terms of what to expect on trail, and at the same time is committed to protecting the fragile environment and respecting the local communities along the route. To achieve, this we have a short self-assessment to access the NextGen GHT details.
