GHT Stories

The Great Himalaya Trail (GHT) is more of a concept than a single path, spanning over 4,500 kilometres across five countries. Because it was formally ‘branded’ and mapped relatively recently (pioneered largely by Robin Boustead in the mid-2000s), the literature surrounding and about the GHT is a mix of modern tactical guides and older ‘traversal’ memoirs that paved the way.

If there is a book or resource that you think should be included in this list, please get in touch and provide us with some details.

Essential GHT Online Publications & Digital Journals

Beyond the physical books, there is a wealth of digital content from “fast-packers,” solo adventurers, and environmental researchers who have documented their journeys in real-time or as comprehensive digital reports.

The Great Himalaya Trail (Official Site): greathimalayatrail.com

The primary hub for trail updates, digital maps, and section-by-section breakdowns. It includes a special section for trip reports from trekkers across various years.

ExplorersWeb – GHT Series

A multi-part deep dive (e.g., Part II: Rolwaling to the Tibetan Border) that covers technical difficulty, psychological challenges, and interviews with seasoned guides and thru-hikers like Jasmine Star.

StoryCycle – 99 Days on GHT: storycycle.com

A multimedia project by Saurav Dhakal documenting a 1,555km journey. It focuses heavily on “digital mapping” and the impacts of climate change on Himalayan communities.

Notable GHT Blogs & Expedition Reports

Blissful Hiker (Alison Young): blissfulhiker.com

Alison, an experienced long-distance hiker, recently documented her 2025 expedition. Her blog is excellent for insights into the logistics of trekking at 60 and the emotional weight of the trail.

Mountains with Megan: mountainswithmegan.com

Written by an Appalachian Trail veteran, this blog provides a “thru-hiker’s perspective” on the GHT, focusing on independent navigation and the “logistical nightmare” of resupplying in remote Nepal.

Belousov Guide: belousov.guide

A very detailed technical blog from a trekker who completed the trail in 2 months. It includes weights of gear, daily distances (often 60km+), and honest cultural observations.

Patagonian Dreams: patagoniandreams.com

Features a “Tag Archive” for the GHT with stunning photography and reports focused on the remote Limi Valley and the post-earthquake resilience of the regions.

Hiking Advisor (Dutch/English): https://hikingadvisor.be/

Detailed technical reports often cited by the ultralight community, focusing on the “High Route” vs. “Low Route” decision-making.

GHT Video & Multimedia

To truly understand the scale of the Great Himalaya Trail (GHT), video and multimedia projects are essential. They capture the thin air, the verticality, and the quiet moments in remote villages that words often miss.

Wilderness Prime (Dave Brophy) – Extensive YouTube vlog series covering the full traverse.

Walking the GHT with Heather Hawkins – A documentary-style look at a full traverse.

Children of the Snow Land – Feature documentary about children of the GHT regions.

99 Days on the GHT (StoryCycle) – A multimedia storytelling project.

Fast-Packing & FKT (Fastest Known Time) Reports

Social Media & Live Tracking

If you want to see the trail in “real-time,” many hikers use these platforms:

Polarsteps: Search for “Great Himalaya Trail” to see interactive maps and photo journals from current and past expeditions.

Instagram Tags: #GreatHimalayaTrail and #GHTNepal are the primary tags used by the small community (approx. 20-30 people per year) who attempt the full traverse.

GHT Documentaries & Feature Films

These films range from professional cinematic productions to raw, high-stakes expedition records.

Great Himalaya Trail, High Route – The Ultimate Trail (2014)

Directed by Philippe Gatta. This film follows Philippe and Anna Gatta as they attempt to run the 1,700km high route of the Nepal GHT in just 40 days—averaging a marathon a day across passes over 5,000m.

The Great Himalaya Trail – My Climate Initiative

A short film by Paribesh Pradhan that looks at the GHT through the lens of environmental change. It highlights how the communities along the trail are the first to feel the impacts of melting glaciers.

Children of the Snow Land (2017)

While not a trekking film, this award-winning documentary follows children from the high Himalayas (the very villages the GHT traverses) who were sent away for education and are trekking back home for the first time in 12 years.

GHT YouTube Series & Vlogs

If you want a “day-in-the-life” perspective of a thru-hiker, these channels offer the most comprehensive footage.

Wilderness Prime (Dave Brophy)

Perhaps the most thorough daily log available. Dave vlogged nearly every single day of his 5-month journey across the Nepal GHT. It’s raw, honest, and shows the gruelling reality of “path-finding” when the trail disappears.

World Expeditions – Walking the GHT with Heather Hawkins

A visual journey of Australian survivor and adventurer Heather Hawkins, who walked the full 1,700km Nepal section with her children. It’s excellent for seeing the cultural side of the trail.

Ryan Sandes & Ryno Griesel – GHT Fastest Known Time (FKT)

Produced in collaboration with brands like Red Bull and Salomon, these high-energy videos document the record-breaking 25-day run across the Nepal section.

GHT Interactive & Multimedia Projects

The GHT Google Earth Flyover

Created by Erin Saver (Walking with Wired), this is a specialized 3D flyover that allows you to see the entire topography of the high route. It’s a great tool for visualizing the “staircase” nature of the terrain.

StoryCycle: 99 Days on the GHT

An interactive digital storytelling platform that combines GPS data, photography, and interviews to map the trail’s heritage and environmental state.

GHT “Virtual Trek” by Robin Boustead

The official GHT website often hosts panoramic 360-degree photography of key passes like the West Col and Amphu Labsta, providing a “first-person” view of the most dangerous sections.

Walking the Great Himalaya Trail with Heather Hawkins

This video provides an inspiring visual narrative of a family’s journey across the entire 1,700km Nepal section, showcasing both the physical challenges and the deep cultural interactions along the trail.
